When we heard the news at church about our beloved friend, I resolved to learn more about ALS and how it impacts individuals because I had no idea how profoundly it affected people. I simply wanted to send it along to anyone who may be suffering with this dreadful sickness or knows someone who may be suffering because I came across some really fascinating studies. ALS: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a terrible disease.
From the National Library of Medicine I found the following information: Significant advances have increased. Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet this has not translated into any greatly effective therapies. It appears that a number of abnormal physiological processes occur simultaneously in this devastating disease. Ideally, a multidrug regimen, including glutamate antagonists, antioxidants, a centrally acting anti-inflammatory agent, microglial cell modulators (including tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-alpha] inhibitors), an antiapoptotic agent, 1 or more neurotrophic growth factors, and a mitochondrial function-enhancing agent would be required to comprehensively address the known pathophysiology of ALS.

Remarkably, cannabis appears to have activity in all of those areas. Preclinical data indicate that cannabis has powerful antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In the G93A-SOD1 ALS mouse, this has translated to prolonged neuronal cell survival, delayed onset, and slower progression of the disease. Cannabis also has properties applicable to symptom management of ALS. Which include analgesia, muscle relaxation, bronchodilation, saliva reduction, appetite stimulation, and sleep induction. With respect to the treatment of ALS, from both a disease modifying and symptom management viewpoint, clinical trials with cannabis are the next logical step. Based on the currently available scientific data, it is reasonable to think that cannabis might significantly slow the progression of ALS. Potentially extending life expectancy and substantially reducing the overall burden of the disease.

I know that a lot of people have a Negative attitude when it comes to cannabis. God gave us the cannabis plant for a reason. We plant tomato seeds and cucumber seeds and no one says anything about that. Shoot I can have a whole garden full of them and no one cares. Where do you think those beautiful flowers we all love so much come from? A seed, just like the cannabis plant. God gave us that seed for a reason. But we seem to forget that because it’s all tide up in politics where it has no business being.
Marijuana is a substance with many properties that may be applicable to the management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These include analgesia, muscle relaxation, bronchodilation, saliva reduction, appetite stimulation, and sleep induction. In addition, marijuana has now been shown to have strong antioxidative and neuroprotective effects, which may prolong neuronal cell survival. In areas where it is legal to do so, marijuana should be considered in the pharmacological management of ALS. Further investigation into the usefulness of marijuana in this setting is warranted. According to ALS News Today: ALS is a neurodegenerative disorder in which worsening muscle weakness leads to movement problems. And other symptoms such as trouble swallowing, speaking, and breathing. Patients also can experience digestive issues, mental health problems, and changes in behavior. Muscle weakness is the hallmark symptom of ALS. Usually this weakness starts off mild and only affects one body part. But with the progression of ALS it becomes more severe and starts affecting other body parts. Learn more about the symptoms HERE.
I just wanted to blog about this today. It really made me want to learn more about ALS and how people can try and find relief from it. I do believe we need further research. Take Care! Learn more about Brian Health also HERE.
